COMPONENTS OF THE EXCEL WINDOW

 

After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Launch or open the Excel program
  • Identify the components of an Excel window

 

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that can help to organize and calculate information.

 

LAUNCH THE EXCEL PROGRAM

  


Double-click on the program icon to open the program (or right-click and select Open).

This icon is for Excel 2016.

 

IDENTIFY THE COMPONENTS OF AN EXCEL WINDOW

Look at the diagram and the table below to identify the parts of a worksheet.

Title Bar

Displays the name of the workbook

Quick Access Toolbar

Displays commands for everyday use – can be customized

Ribbon

Main location for menus and tools

File Tab

Opens the Backstage View to display file-management commands (New, Save As, Print, etc)

Ribbon Tabs

The ribbon is divided into different sections. The names of these sections are called ribbon tabs (Home, Insert, etc).

Ribbon Groups

Each ribbon tab contains different groups with related commands

Name Box

Displays the name of the active cell

Formula Bar

Displays the contents of the active cell (values, formulas, text)

Worksheet Tabs

Display the names of the different sheets

10

Status Bar

Displays the workbook’s current status (Ready/Edit, Switch view of document, Zoom in and out)
